Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 45 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.
Rotary's first polio project was to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Inspired by that successful vaccination campaign, Rotary went on to become a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, which has reduced polio cases around the world by 99.9 percent.
Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our members, Rotary has contributed more than US$2.9 billion in PolioPlus grants and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 3 billion children in 122 countries from this disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $11 billion to the effort.
Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
On Friday 2 October, IPP Robin and Louie attended the 4th Induction and Changeover ceremony for the Rotary Club of Plaridel Polaris in the Philippines.
During the ceremony the national anthem is played and several references to trust in God are made. The overall ceremony and procedure bring to mind how I think the original founders and subsequent club meetings would have been held, following guidelines and protocol matters.
The event was very well organised and attended by more than 120 people.
It is always a pleasure to see how other clubs manage their events and note the small variances that appear in different cultures.
The Philippine people are very friendly and welcoming. Louie and I were very well treated.
The event was full of energy and everyone was dressed to impress. Notably the members of the club all wore the same colour suits and the guests all dressed in the colour code of Black Semi-Formal attire.
The members displayed a great deal of energy and even danced their way in to the presentation area where each was individually greeted by the district govenor and several other dignitaries.
We had a great speaker at RCWL on 29 september - Sam Weavers, “The Popcorn Kid”, and his dad Shaun.
Sam shared the story of how he started making popcorn at just nine years old, initially selling to friends and family. Then came the big break - Regal Cinema Kensington approached him to supply their popcorn!
After several years producing popcorn from the family home, Sam invested $20,000 in machinery to increase production. In September 2025, plans for a warehouse on his parents’ property were approved, and the business continues to grow. Sam now supplies outlets including United, IGA and Klose’s Foodland, and is even able to employ people as the demand increases.
But there’s much more to Sam’s business than popcorn and profits.
He supports childhood cancer charities and partners with Kids4Kids, with 40% of popcorn bale sales going to this charity.
He has raised an incredible $30,000 so far and has received seven awards along the way.
What an excellent speaker Sam has become. He spoke with confidence, enthusiasm and genuine passion!
A wonderful story of entrepreneurship, determination, family support and giving back.
This year's Walk for Respect is being held on 7 November 2026 and details are in the attached flyer and further information is available on the Walk for Respect website www.walkforrespect.au
In summary:
Gather at 9am Victoria Square South
Walk Commences at 10 am
Walk Concludes at Elder Park
Speeches 10:45
We would like this years walk to be bigger than ever before, to show that together we say NO to Domestic Violence and YES to Respectful relationships.
If your club is within reasonable commuting distance to Victoria Square we would love to see you there and if not why not have your own walk where you are like I know the Rotary Club of Port Pirie is doing!
Minister Alice Rolls will be one of the guest speakers at the end of our walk this year so come along and hear how the Government's response is tracking to implementing the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family & Sexual Violence.
Get your purple on, get a group together of club members, family and friends and come and support this the 4th Annual Walk for Respect.
During President Elect Training it was requested that Clubs put aside $500 in their budget to support the Walk for Respect and other activities of the Rotary Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Prevention Committee, so if your club can support the work of the committee in this way, now is also the time to make a contribution;
Contributions can be made to the walks host club for receiving payments: Rotary Club of Regency Park DV Campaign Account
BSB 105-011, Account 125 153 440
Please include a payment reference with your club name.
It would be appreciated if you will advertise the walk during your club meetings, in your newsletter and on your social media accounts.
Please get a group from your club together, and come and support this Rotary event. It's important that we do what we can to promote peace and peace starts with ourselves an in our homes with respectful relationships.
Yours in Rotary
Paul Della
Chair, Rotary Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Prevention Committee in District 9510
We have picked up a couple of magnetic signs for Club use.
Whenever we are out in the community, we should endeavour to increase our advertising.
We will keep in the lectern at the Bartley, drivers can take them for their fortnightly Meals on Wheels duty, and we should make sure that they are on show at Bunnings.
We also ordered some business/calling cards for member use - have a couple in your wallet or handbag
We no longer have access to our old website. We have a new domain name that will be managed through ClubRunner. This new domain name is slightly different to the old one. The new website address is:
www.rotarywestlakes.com
We have a new QR code, differentiated by circles on the corner
Members to arrange their own replacement if they cannot front for their meeting night.

Responsibilities
Manage
- banners (pre & post meeting)
- name tags as appropriate
- Microphone is now in the lectern
The speaker system operates on both battery or power.
Prior to meeting, plug in the charger with the connection point being in front of the speaker box. Once fully charged (blue light), the charger can be removed (or left in place).
NOTE: Ensure that Power is plugged in to the actual Power inlet on the speaker and not the Microphone inlet
Three microphones are all battery operated. There are ‘some’ spare batteries in our lectern. Microphones operate on a simple On/Off and are already paired to the system.
The speaker box has a Master Volume knob as well as a Microphone Volume knob. These should not need adjustment unless circumstances have changed. Test inside meeting room.
At end of meeting please carefully check all items, and put safely back in lectern.
Liaise with the Guest Speaker Coordinator to meet and greet Guest Speaker, arrange for introduction, introduce to other members.
- Arrange meal for Guest speaker, cost to the RCWL account (so that Steve can pay later on)
