MEMBER NEWS THIS WEEK:
We think PP Robin is in Europe, maybe caught up in the German elections???
At our 1 September meeting, Club members were taken on an incredible journey beyond Earth with guest speaker and past club member Hervé Astier.
Presenting a Space Odyssey, one of Hervé's key messages was that space isn't somewhere else – we use space every single day. From communication and navigation to weather forecasting, technology and national security, satellites and space infrastructure play an increasingly important role in our everyday lives.
The new space race is no longer just about exploration. It is about infrastructure, commerce, national security and sovereignty.
We were amazed to learn that Adelaide is becoming Australia's space capital, with more than 100 space-related organisations and an almost end-to-end space ecosystem right here in our backyard.
Hervé also shared his work with Neumann Space, where innovative propulsion systems are being developed in Adelaide to help satellites manoeuvre successfully in an increasingly congested lower orbit space environment.
With up to 100,000 satellites expected to be launched by 2030, South Australia has an incredible opportunity to play a major role in the future of space.
Thank you, Hervé, for a fascinating and thought-provoking presentation.
Over the past two weeks, PhD student Jason Tan has been attending the Club requesting volunteers.
His project, which he explained to us, seeks to measure ageing impact on our blood vessels. By conducting a series of tests, Jason hopes to establish a relationship that might enable us to predict cardiovascular disease.
To do this, Jason and the team at the Basil Hetzel Research Institute need volunteers to:
donate a blood sample; and
complete a short, simple questionnaire.
Ideally about 200 participants, with at least 30 in each age group to provide statistical relevance.
Hence approaching Rotary - to see if he can get a cohort in the older age groups!
At least a couple of us have joined and been through the testing process, which is very simple. Less than an hour at the Institute on 37A Woodville Road.
We have picked up a couple of magnetic signs for Club use.
Whenever we are out in the community, we should endeavour to increase our advertising.
We will keep in the lectern at the Bartley, drivers can take them for their fortnightly Meals on Wheels duty, and we should make sure that they are on show at Bunnings.
We also ordered some business/calling cards for member use - have a couple in your wallet or handbag
Semaphore Surf LifeSaving Club - Making a Difference in Our Community
Two inspiring guest speakers – Chelsea Daughtry, recipient of the Max Christie Award, and Mick Jarvis, recipient of the Brian Page Award, addressed the Club. Both of these awards are funded annually by the RCWL.
Chelsea runs the Seabirds program, supporting nippers who need a little extra help to participate. The program creates a safe and supportive space where children can take part in activities that may otherwise be unavailable to them, while building confidence, skills and friendships and helping every child, including those neurodivergent children, who need to feel included.
Mick trains young people and adults in watercraft safety, including jet skis and other watercraft. He spoke about the challenges of conditions in our local waters and the importance of developing the skills and knowledge needed to stay safe.
We also heard about the important work happening to protect our local coastline and waterways, including the impact of algal blooms and the need to protect seabirds and other wildlife.
As part of our support for the SSLSC program, the Rotary Club of West Lakes is proud to provide a $1000 donation to the awardees to help the club meet needs and may be used to fund-pool to purchase big ticket items that may not be covered through government funding.
Congratulations to Chelsea and Mick on their well-deserved awards and thank you both for sharing your stories and for the wonderful work you do in our community.
We no longer have access to our old website. We have a new domain name that will be managed through ClubRunner. This new domain name is slightly different to the old one. The new website address is:

We have a new QR code, differentiated by circles on the corner

Responsibilities
Manage
- banners (pre & post meeting)
- name tags as appropriate
- Microphone is now in the lectern
The speaker system operates on both battery or power.
Prior to meeting, plug in the charger with the connection point being in front of the speaker box. Once fully charged (blue light), the charger can be removed (or left in place).
NOTE: Ensure that Power is plugged in to the actual Power inlet on the speaker and not the Microphone inlet
Three microphones are all battery operated. There are ‘some’ spare batteries in our lectern. Microphones operate on a simple On/Off and are already paired to the system.
The speaker box has a Master Volume knob as well as a Microphone Volume knob. These should not need adjustment unless circumstances have changed. Test inside meeting room.
At end of meeting please carefully check all items, and put safely back in lectern.
Liaise with the Guest Speaker Coordinator to meet and greet Guest Speaker, arrange for introduction, introduce to other members.
- Arrange meal for Guest speaker, cost to the RCWL account (so that Steve can pay later on)
